ATSIAPAT DANCE – GREECE & TURKEY

Atsiapat also called Atsapat is a traditional Greek male dance. This “traditional” is said to have originated from a region called Pontus located in Greece. Furthermore, this dance is considered to be a part of the “three traditional male Greek dances”. In addition, this dance style involves a combination of short steps and exaggerated feet movements involving stretching.

The beauty of the dance when performed in a group can be seen in the subtle elegant movements of the male dancers, tapping their feet and shrugging their shoulders while holding hands all through the dance. 

A. History/origin of the Atsiapat Dance:

The Atsiapat Horon originated from the Pontus region located on the Black Sea coast in the northern region of today’s Turkey. It is closely associated with the Serra dance which is a Pontic Greek war dance although the Atsiapat is a tad subtler in comparison to the Serra dance.

B. Costumes used in the Atsiapat Dance:

It’s a male dance and the costume worn by the men are traditional Pontus attire.
