BEROVKA DANCE -MACEDONIA

“Dance from Berovo” is what a Southeast European style of dancing known as Berovka literally means when translated. This “folk” dance is supposed to have originated from a town called Berovo located in the Republic of Macedonia. Furthermore, this dance is mainly performed by women, and comprises of fast feet movements.

A. History/origin of Berovka:

According to the cultural history of Macedonia, this dance first originated from a town called Berovo, and hence has been aptly named Berovka. Furthermore, this dance comprises of several variations.

B. Costumes used in the Berovka:

The costume used by the performers (mainly females) includes a colourful long dress, a colourful apron, a pair of red stockings, a pair of shoes and an elaborate headgear.

C. Music involved in the Berovka:

The major musical instrument used in this dance style is the gajda i.e. a form of bagpie.

D. Training availability and technique involved in the Berovka:

In terms of technique, the performers in this dance style initially arrange themselves in a half circle. They then dance quickly to the rhythm of the music by using a lot of “jumping” movements. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world since this “folk” dance is mainly performed in Macedonia.
