BORROWDALE DANCE- ZIMBABWE

Named after a “Horse racing track” is an African dance form known as Borrowdale. Also known as “dance of horses” this style is said to have originated from Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe located in the southern part of Africa. Apparently, this dance form was popularized by a popular African musical group known as “Khiama Boyz”. Furthermore, the basic step of this dance style involves the imitation of body movements that are commonly seen in galloping horses.

a. History/origin of the Borrowdale Dance:

This dance style was first created in Zimbabwe by developing steps that resembled a “galloping horse”. In addition, this form of dancing was aptly named after a “horse racing track” located in the Borrowdale suburb in the city of Harare.

b. Costumes used in the Borrowdale Dance:

There are no particular costumes that need to be worn while performing this dance.

c. Music involved in the Borrowdale Dance:

Mainly percussion instruments such as drums are used in producing music for this dance style.

d. Training availability and technique involved in the Borrowdale Dance:

In terms of technique, this dance technique involves extremely elaborate footwork, and includes imitating the movements of  galloping race horses. As for training centres/schools, there are none available around the world since this “horse dance” is mainly performed in Zimbabwe in southern Africa.
