Considered to be similar to “Bolero” is a dance style known as Cachucha. This “solo” dance is said to have actually originated from Cuba although, it is now considered to have belonged to Spain. This dance is essentially performed mainly by a female, and is performed to the rhythm of the Andalusian national song. In addition, a percussion instrument called castanet is generally used in producing music for this dance style.
a. History/origin of the Cachucha:
Although Cachucha dance is considered to be “Spanish” it was actually created in Cuba. Furthermore, this dance style was popularized by an Austrian ballerina artist Fanny Elssler when she performed it publically during an opera called “La Donna Del Lago”.
b. Costume used in the Cachucha:
The costume used is a dress that reveals the back of a performer (mainly female) and also comprises of a long skirt.
c. Music involved in the Cachucha:
A percussion instrument called “castanet” is mainly used in producing the music for this dance style.
d. Training availability and technique involved in the Cachucha:
In terms of technique, this dance involves the use of twinkling footwork and movement in the hips in complete harmony with the music produced by the castanet. As for training centres/schools, there are none available, since this “Bolero” like dance style is not very popular around the world.
