GLUVO-NEMO DANCE – MACEDONIA

Gluvo-Nemo is a form of Southeast European dancing which when literally translated into English means “deaf and mute dance”. This “folk” dance is said to have originated from the Mala Reka and the Galicnik region located in Macedonia. Furthermore, this dance is performed without the use of any form of music. In addition, it is mainly performed by women.

A. History/origin of the Gluvo-Nemo:

According to the cultural history of Macedonia, this dance was created in the Mala Reka and Galicnik region in country. Apparently, this dance was developed using no music. Furthermore, it was the rhythm created by the necklace made up of gold coins worn by the performer which is an integral part of the costume that is used in this dance in place of music.

B. Costumes used in the Gluvo-Nemo:

The costume used in this dance by the performer (mainly female) includes a white dress along with a white skirt, a belt, a red apron, a pair of stockings, a pair of shoes, and a necklace made up of gold coins.

C. Music involved in the Gluco-Nemo:

This dance forms does not involve any music except the rhythm produced by the necklace made up of gold coins while the dancers are performing.

D. Training availability and technique involved in the Gluco-Nemo:

In terms of technique, in this dance the performers arrange themselves around a half circle. They then hold their belts placing the left arm over the right, and dance to the rhythm produced by the necklace made up of gold coins. Furthermore, the dancer mainly “jumps” while performing. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world since this “folk” dance is mainly performed in Macedonia.
