KARIKAZO DANCE – HUNGARY

Performed mainly by “women” is a Central European dance form known as Karikazo. This “traditional” dance is supposed to have originated from Hungary. Furthermore, this dance is performed in a group around a circle. In addition, it is also performed to a 4/4 time signature.

A. History/origin of the Karikazo:

According to the cultural history of Hungary, this dance was conceived within the country to be performed mainly during auspicious occasions such as marriage. In addition, this dance is mainly performed by “women”.

B. Costumes used in the Karikazo:

The costumes worn in this dance style by the performers include a white long sleeve shirt, colourful skirt, a pair of stockings, and a pair of shoes.

C. Music involved in the Karikazo:

A form of group or solo singing known as “cappella” is mainly performed in this dance style. No musical instruments are basically used.

D. Training availability and technique involved in the Karikazo:

In terms of technique, the performers (mainly females) arrange themselves in a circle and hold each other around the waist. Furthermore, the performers then dance around the circle to the rhythm of the “cappella”. As for training schools/centers, there are none available around the world since this “traditional” dance is mainly performed in Hungary.
