KASIK HAVASI DANCE – TURKEY

Literally meaning “spoon rhythm” is a Eurasian dance style known as Kasik Havasi.  This “spoon” dance is said to have originated from Turkey, and is considered to be extremely popular throughout the Mediterranean region. In this genre of dancing “two wooden spoons” are used as musical instruments.

a. History/origin of Kasik Havasi:

The dance although originating from Turkey has spread throughout the Mediterranean, and hence is supposed to be extremely popular throughout the region.

b. Costumes used in the Kasik Havasi:

There is no particular costume worn by the performers in this form of dancing.

c. Music involved in the Kasik Havasi:

Two wooden spoons are basically used as musical instruments in this dance style. In addition, to the music folk songs are also sung. Furthermore, instruments such as baglama and clarinet may also be used in this dance form

d. Training availability and the technique involved in the Kasik Havasi:

In terms of technique, this dance involves performers swaying to the rhythm of the music created by two wooden spoons. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world since this “spoon” dance is mainly performed by people belonging to “Turkey” and the “Mediterranean” region.
