KLOMPENDANSEN DANCE – NETHERLANDS

Commonly referred to either as “Boerendansen” (i.e. farmer dancing) or “Folkloristisch” is a western European dance style known as Klompendansen. This “traditional” dance is said to have originated from Netherlands. Apparently, the word “Klompendansen” when literally translated means “clog dancing”. Furthermore, this dance involves quick movement of the feet especially involving the toes and the heels. In addition, in this dance style shoes made from wood form an integral part of the costume worn by the performer.

A. History/origin of the Klompendansen:

According to the cultural history of Netherlands, this dance was essentially created in the rural area of the country. Furthermore, it was supposed to have been developed from a pagan tradition. In addition, this dance style gradually over time became popular among people living in the cities such as Amsterdam.

B. Costumes used in the Klompendansen:

The men as well as the female performer wear traditional Dutch costumes. In addition, a pair of wooden shoes known locally as “klompen” forms an integral part of the dance form.

C. Music involved in the Klompendansen:

Since Klompendansen essentially is “clog dancing” the music is basically generated by percussively striking the wooden shoes worn by the performer. In addition, traditional “Dutch” instruments such as the accordion and the barrel organ are also used.

D. Training availability and the technique used in the Klompendansen:

In terms of dance technique, the performers i.e. male and female basically dance to a rhythm created by the accompanying music as well as to the tapping of the heels of the “wooden” shoes known as “clogs”. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world since this “traditional” dance is mainly performed in Netherlands.
