In Buddhist rituals like Yeongsanjae, Suryukjae, Sangjugwon Gongje, Gakbaejae, and Saengjeonyesujae, among others, This is one of the Korean dances that is performed. Furthermore, the this considered to be one of the most important Buddhist dance forms in Korea.

The choreography and costume used in this dance essentially resembles a “butterfly”, and hence has been aptly named “Nabichum” in Korean which when literally translated means “butterfly dance”.

The costume mainly used by the performers in this dance form includes a monks robe called “jangsam” and a peaked hat known as “white gokkal”.

The musical instrument mainly used in this dance style is a large gong known as “taejing”.

In terms of technique, this involves the performers imitating the movements made by a “butterfly”, and hence has been rightly named “Nabichum” which means “butterfly dance”. As for training centres/schools, there are not many available around the world since this “ritualistic” dance is mainly performed in the Korean region.
