The Seldoms Unveil “Superbloom” for Their 20th Anniversary Celebration

Chicago’s The Seldoms celebrate their 20th anniversary with “Superbloom,” an event takes place on June 1 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance.

The Seldoms, a Chicago-based dance company celebrating 20 years of multidisciplinary performances presents the world premiere of” Superbloom”.This captivating evening-length production seamlessly weaves together the art forms of dance, live music, animation, and innovative costume and lighting design. Mark your calendars for the one-night-only performance on Thursday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m., taking place at the prestigious Harris Theater for Music and Dance, located at 205 E. Randolph in the heart of Chicago.

Carrie Hanson, the visionary Founding Artistic Director and choreographer, describes “Superbloom” as an awe-inspiring multimedia experience that explores the themes of radical beauty, untamed wilderness, and the resilience and fragility of our natural world. In our current Anthropocene epoch, where human activity has exerted a dominant influence on the environment, this performance serves as both a mirror reflecting the sublime beauty of nature and an antidote to the grief felt amidst these ecological challenges.

“Superbloom” features an ensemble of five exceptional dancers whose movements embody the vitality and enchantment of wildflowers. Collaborating with Hanson are two extraordinary visual artists: the acclaimed painter Jackie Kazarian and the visionary video artist Liviu Pasare. Together, they are creating mesmerizing video animations, seamlessly merging Pasare’s captivating digital art with Kazarian’s stunning abstract landscapes. Enhancing the immersive experience, Kazarian’s meticulously designed long textile trains will be activated by the dancers, adding an ethereal dimension to the performance.

Adding another layer of artistic brilliance, the musical duo Finom, composed of Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, will perform an original score live, creating an evocative sonic landscape that resonates with the emotions portrayed on stage. To complete the sensory experience, Julie E. Ballard, The Seldoms’ technical director, resident lighting designer, and stage manager, has meticulously crafted a lighting design that envelops the audience in a symphony of colors, perfectly accentuating the dancers’ movements and the visual artistry on display.

“Superbloom” is a testament to The Seldoms’ unwavering commitment to exploring our relationship with the environment, advocating for stewardship, sustainability, and social justice. Artistic Director Carrie Hanson explains, “We employ dance as a catalyst for critical social discourse, and there is no issue more pressing and urgent than the environmental crises we face today. ‘Superbloom’ serves as both a cultural resistance and a cultural vision. In these times of healing, hope, and resilience following the pandemic, audiences are in dire need of inspiration and beauty as we confront multiple environmental challenges.”
