OSOGOVKA DANCE – MACEDONIA

Originating from a “mountainous” region is a Southeast European dance known as Osogovka. This “folk” dance is said to have originated from villages found in the Osogovo Mountain located in Georgia. Furthermore, this dance is renowned for its music, rhythm, and costumes.

A. History/origin of Osogovka:

In terms of history/origin of this Macedonian folk dance not much information is available.

B. Costumes used in the Osogovka:

The costume worn by the performers includes a white long dress, a white trouser, a pair of boots, and a white headgear.

C. Music involved in the Osogovka:

The music for this dance form is provided by an orchestra comprising mainly of “bagpipers”. So the musical instrument mainly used in this style of dancing is the “bagpipe”.

D. Training availability and technique involved in the Osogovka:

In terms of technique, the performers initially arrange themselves in a semicircle. Furthermore, they then dance to the rhythm of the accompanying music by making use of sharp feet movements and well balanced jumps. In addition, while performing the dancers hold each other by the shoulder. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world since this “folk” dance is mainly performed in Macedonia.
