PEMBE DANCE – MACEDONIA

Performed mainly by a male and female is a Southeast European dance style known as Pembe. This “folk” dance is said to have originated from a city called Veles located in Republic of Macedonia. Furthermore, this dance is renowned for comprising of “stable feet movements”. In addition, the dancers perform to a 2/4 rhythm.

A. History/origin of Pembe:

There is no information regarding the history/origin of this dance style called “Pembe” that has originated from Macedonia.

B. Costumes used in the Pembe:

The costumes worn by performers (males and females) are basically colourful traditional Macedonian outfits.

C. Music involved in the Pembe:

The musical instrument basically used in this dance style includes the tambura i.e. a type of drum, a mandolin, and a 12 string guitar.

D. Training availability and the technique involved in the Pembe:

 In terms of technique, the performers in this dance arrange themselves in a half circle. Furthermore, they then hold their hands up to the level of their shoulders, and begin dancing to the rhythm of accompanying music. In addition, the performers in this dance make use of steady feet movements. As for training centers/schools, there are a few available mainly in the city of California located in the United States of America for all those interested in learning this unique “Macedonian” folk dance.
