POVRATENO DANCE – MACEDONIA

“Returned back” is the literal translation of a Southeast European dance style known as Povrateno. This “traditional” dance is said to have originated from a region called “Skopje” located in Republic of Macedonia. Furthermore, this dance style is mainly performed by women, and comprises of “medium fast feet movements”. In addition, like many other Macedonian dance styles, the Povrateno also is performed to a 2/4 rhythm.

A. History/origin of the Povrateno:

There is no information available regarding the history/origin of this dance style that has originated from a region called Skopje in Macedonia.

B. Costumes used in the Povrateno:

The costume worn in this dance style varies according to the gender as follows:

1. For males:

The attire worn includes a long dress that includes a trouser/pyjama, an overcoat, a cloth tied around the waist, belt, and a pair of boots.

2. For females:

The attire worn includes a long dress that includes a skirt, an apron, belt and a headgear.

C. Music involved in the Povrateno:

The major musical instrument used in this dance style is the gajda i.e. a form of bagpie.

D. Training availability and the technique involved in the Povrateno:

In terms of technique, in this dance the performers initially arrange themselves in a semicircle. Furthermore, they then hold their belts by placing the left hand over the right and begin dancing to the rhythm of the accompanying music. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world since this “traditional” dance is mainly performed in Macedonia.
