KOLBASTI DANCE – TURKEY

“Caught red handed by the police” is what Kolbasti a Eurasian dance form means when literally translated. This “social” dance is said to have originated from a seaport known as Trabzon located in the northeast of Turkey during the 1930’s.  This dance is mainly performed during festive occasions such as marriages especially by the younger generation.

a. History/origin of the Kolbasti Dance:

Apparently, a legend states that this Turkey dance style was inspired and developed in Turkey as a result of police patrols arresting people found drunk on the streets. Furthermore, over the years this dance has become extremely popular all around Turkey, and is performed mainly by the younger generation during marriages.

b. Costumes used in the Kolbasti Dance:

Since this dance form is essentially casual there is no particular set of costume worn by the performers.

c. Music involved in the Kolbasti Dance:

The musical instruments mainly used in this dance genre include the drums, shrill pipe, tambourine, and cymbals.

d. Training availability and technique involved in the Kolbasti Dance:

In terms of technique, this dance form essentially involves the performer imitating the body movements of a drunk. Furthermore, this dance involves the use rapid feet and hand movements. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world since this “casual” dance style is mainly performed in Turkey.
