KOPACKA DANCE – MACEDONIA

Originally named “Sitnata” (meaning the small/fine one) is a Southeast European dance style known as Kopacka. This “folk” dance is said to have originated from region called Pijanec located in the eastern part of the Republic of Macedonia. Furthermore, this dance comprises of “fast” feet movements, and is mainly performed by men. In addition, this dance is performed to the 2/4 rhythm, and comprises of two parts i.e. slow and fast.

A. History/origin of Kopacka:

 This dance was first created by village dancers belonging to the Pijanec region located in the eastern part of Macedonia. Furthermore, these dancers from the village then introduced this form of dancing (which was initially called “Sitnata”) to a national folklore performance group known as “Tanec”. It was then this group that popularized this dance form, and also renamed it “Kopacka”.

B. Costumes used in the Kopacka:

The costumes worn by the performers (mainly men) include a white long sleeve shirt, a black overcoat, a black trouser, a pair of shoes, a handkerchief, and a black cap.

C. Music involved in the Kopacka:

 The musical instruments mainly used in this dance style are a pair of drums.

D. Training availability and the technique involved in the Kopacka:

 In terms of technique, in this dance the performers initially arrange themselves in a half circle. Furthermore, the dancers then perform to the rhythm of the music by making use of quick feet movements. In addition, jumps and scissors movements are also used by the dancer during a performance. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world since this “folk” dance is mainly performed in Macedonia.
