Brown, and Twyla Tharp. Alvin Ailey, who debuted as a dancer on the BAM stage in 1956, established a deep connection with the community, and the company’s residency at BAM since 1969 has further solidified their enduring ties. Under the artistic direction of Robert Battle, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater continues to be a vital force in the city where Ailey’s legacy thrives, as well as around the world.

Program A: Brooklyn Bonds – Modern Masters with Brooklyn Connections

Immerse yourself in the soulful artistry of the Ailey company as they perform recent and rarely seen works by esteemed choreographers Kyle Abraham, Ronald K. Brown, and Twyla Tharp. Tharp, making her long-awaited return to the BAM stage after nearly a decade, presents Roy’s Joys, a sultry piece set to the silky jazz of Roy Eldridge. Brown’s Dancing Spirit embodies the elegance and influence of the legendary Judith Jamison, while Abraham’s Are You in Your Feelings? is a triumphant celebration of Black culture and the enduring spirit of youth that resides within us all.

Program B: All Ailey – Revered Classics by Alvin Ailey

Dates: Jun 7 and Jun 9 at 7:30pm, Jun 10 at 2pm, and Jun 11 at 3pm

Experience the genius of Alvin Ailey himself through four extraordinary works. Night Creature, a vibrant collaboration with Duke Ellington, sets a buoyant tone. Cry, a powerful 16-minute solo, is Ailey’s heartfelt tribute to Black women everywhere. Survivors, a poignant creation by Ailey and Mary Barnett, pays homage to the remarkable courage of Nelson and Winnie Mandela, accompanied by the visionary jazz of Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln. Finally, Revelations, a landmark masterpiece that has captivated audiences since its inception in 1960, concludes the program, taking spectators on a transcendent journey.
