Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance (CLD) is proud to present two captivating productions that push the boundaries of contemporary dance on Wed Jun 14, 2023, at 7:30pm. marks the premiere of The Winter’s Tale at The Jack Crystal Theater. Based on one of William Shakespeare’s final masterpieces, this production explores themes of improbabilities, loyalty, love, and forgiveness. Choreographer Cherylyn Lavagnino delves into the complex dynamics of sexual politics and gender norms within a patriarchal society, shedding light on the challenges faced by women. Renowned composer Martin Bresnick is collaborating with Lavagnino to create an original score for The Winter’s Tale, set to premiere in Spring 2024 at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music.
Critical Dance raved about Lavagnino’s previous work, describing it as “warm and heartfelt” and praising the beautiful choreography and execution. Audiences can expect another compelling and visually stunning piece with The Winter’s Tale.
In addition to The Winter’s Tale, CLD presents Mythologies, a production inspired by the rich stories of Ancient Greece during the time of the Trojan War. This historically fictional work weaves together mythical characters such as sensual sirens, fierce Amazonian warriors, and the Sacred Band of Thebes. Lavagnino’s choreography showcases the coexistence of strength, grace, and femininity within the dancers, emphasizing the fluidity of sexual practices during that era. The commissioned score, composed by Scott Killian, Jacob Lawson, and featuring vocalist Carol Lipnik, creates a captivating sonic journey for Lavagnino’s choreography. Writer and dramaturg Brian Sostek’s accompanying text adds depth and context to the performance.
The Winter’s Tale and Mythologies feature an exceptional cast and crew, including Cherylyn Lavagnino as the Artistic Director and Choreographer. Frank DenDanto III lends his expertise as the lighting designer, while Stacey Boggs takes on the role of stage manager.
