VETERANS AND REFUGEES FIND HEALING THROUGH DANCE AND MOVEMENT IN “TRUTHS COLLIDING”

An Eight-Week Series culminating in a Free Public Performance to Honor Memorial Day

Exit12 Dance Company, in partnership with the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, is delighted to announce their collaboration on “Truths Colliding,” an inspiring series of creative workshops spanning eight weeks as part of The Intrepid Memorial Day Weekend.. This unique project brings together veterans, refugees, and talented Exit12 artists to explore the profound impact of war on personal and cultural identity. The workshops will take place from April 3 to May 24, and will culminate in a captivating public performance on Friday, May 26, coinciding with Fleet Week NYC and Memorial Day Weekend.

Throughout the project, a diverse group of over a dozen participants, including both combatants and civilians who have endured global conflicts, will engage in closed workshops. These workshops provide a safe and supportive space for dialogue, facilitated by Roman Baca, Exit12’s artistic director and a former service member who served in Fallujah during the Iraq War, and Elizabeth Freeman, a Lead Dance/Movement therapist specializing in traumatic brain injury at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence at Walter Reed.

In these workshops, participants will bravely share their personal stories and engage in cross-cultural conversations, fostering empathy, understanding, and healing. Through the power of movement and dance, they will transform their experiences into a profound artistic expression. Themes such as trauma, loneliness, isolation, peace-building, and community resilience will serve as catalysts for discussions on the impact of war and our shared responsibility in times of conflict.

The culminating public performance promises to be an evening of remarkable beauty and emotional resonance. It will feature a collaborative dance work between the accomplished artists of Exit12 Dance Company and the workshop participants. Additionally, Roman Baca will present a world premiere piece with the dance ensemble, offering a unique perspective on the journey of healing and growth. Following the performance, a thought-provoking moderated discussion will be led by Peter Meineck, a former British Royal Marine and NYU Classics Professor. This conversation will encourage a meaningful exchange between the cast and the audience, exploring the themes raised during the workshops and performance.

“Truths Colliding” exemplifies the transformative power of art and dance in navigating the complex emotions and experiences associated with war. Through movement,

dialogue, and the power of shared storytelling, this project seeks to create a space of unity, understanding, and healing for veterans, refugees, and the wider community.
